Privacy Policy

Effective date: May 23, 2026

The Good Grief Journal is built on trust. You share your most tender moments with us, and we take that responsibility seriously. This Privacy Policy explains exactly what we collect, why, and how we protect it.

1. Information We Collect

  • Account information. When you create an account we collect your email address and a securely hashed password. We never store your password in plain text.
  • Journal entries. The text you write is stored in our database and is private to your account.
  • Photos. If you upload photos they are stored in our secure cloud storage and are accessible only to you.
  • Usage analytics. We collect anonymized, aggregated data about how the app is used (page views, feature interactions) via PostHog to help us improve the product. This data does not include the content of your journal entries.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and maintain your journaling account
  • To authenticate you and keep your account secure
  • To power optional AI-assisted reflections when you request them
  • To send transactional and service-related emails
  • To understand how people use the app and make it better

3. Journal Entry Storage

Your journal entries are stored in a PostgreSQL database hosted by Supabase, protected by row-level security so that only your account can access your entries. We do not read, review, or share your journal entries with any third party, except as described in Section 4 (AI processing) or as required by law.

4. AI Processing of Entries

The Good Grief Journal includes an optional feature that generates a compassionate AI reflection on what you've written. When you use this feature, a portion of your journal entry is sent to Anthropic's API to generate a response. We do not use your entries to train AI models, and Anthropic's Privacy Policy governs how they handle data submitted through their API. You can choose not to use this feature.

5. Photo Storage

Photos you upload are stored in Supabase Storage. They are private, associated only with your account, and are not shared with or accessible by any other user or third party.

6. Email Communications

We may send you the following types of emails:

  • A welcome email when you create your account
  • Transactional emails related to your subscription or account
  • Occasional product updates or tips (you can opt out at any time)

We do not share your email address with third parties for marketing purposes.

7. We Never Sell Your Data

We will never sell, rent, or trade your personal information — especially your journal entries — to any third party, for any reason. Your grief is private, and that is how it will stay.

8. Data Security

We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted connections (HTTPS), password hashing, and database-level access controls. No system is completely secure. In the unlikely event of a data breach that affects your personal information, we will notify you as required by applicable law.

9. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Request deletion of your account and all associated data
  • Opt out of marketing emails at any time

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@thegoodgriefjournal.com.

10. Children's Privacy

The Good Grief Journal is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has created an account, please contact us and we will delete the account.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes via email or a notice within the app. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
